The Classic Comp Report
Honda Marine NZ continues to proudly sponsor the Whangamata Ocean Sports Club’s two main fishing tournaments, the Nautigirls and the Game Fishing Classic.
As always, the eagerly anticipated Nautigirls fishing competition saw the marquee inundated with excited female anglers. With nearly 600 ladies and 180 boats entered, it sure is a sight to behold watching them all leave the Whangamata harbour on the Saturday morning.
Less than favourable conditions however meant that fishing was cut short for a few. The Honda powered boats were out in force though, making short work of the choppy conditions and bringing home some beautiful fish. A superb effort on the tagged and released marlin from and anglers as well.
The rough seas had calmed by Thursday when the Game Fishing Classic tournament kicked off, with an entourage of Honda powered boats leaving the harbour again. Two days of spectacular weather followed with the highlight being yellowfin tuna and marlin caught (as well as nine tagged and released) before the weather deteriorated on the third and final day making fishing a bit harder.
Those lucky anglers who managed to find the hidden Honda Marine flag each day were rewarded with some great Honda Marine sponsored prizes. While one lucky angler took home one of the major spot prizes of a Honda water blaster, brush cutter and life jacket.
Another couple of weekends well spent on the waters of Whangamata, with great company, fresh fish for dinner and prizes to boot.
